Residential Mosaic Workshop for all levels (2021 dates TBC)

€1,350.00

The workshop is taught by renowned sculptor Sören Ernst.

The workshop is held in a beautiful enchanted garden full of mystical creatures, fountains and sculptures. These amazing surroundings will inspire all who attend Soren’s workshop.

Beginners are welcome, as well as more advanced students who may like to try their hand at a more challenging project for example a three-dimensional mosaic. Attention will be given to the individual needs and abilities of each participant.

The focus of the workshop is that you finish your project in the time available, to take the feeling of personal achievement obtained on your holiday home, as well as your finished piece of mosaic. It can either be taken home by plane or combined shipment (costs vary dependent on size of sculpture).

The Mosaic Workshop primarily aims to create a table top or hanging wall piece on a slab of marble the size of a coffee table. The tiles available (15x15 cm) come in all hues of the painter’s pallet and can be broken up and cut to the size desired. For advanced mosaic artists the use of natural materials such as stones, glass or shells on 3 dimensional surfaces, i.e. mannequins or columns, is encouraged.

Sören’s Biography

Sören was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1967. After an initial apprenticeship as a stonemason he soon discovered his passion for sculpture. He served a two-year period near Kiel, in the studio of the sculptor Jörg Plickat. There he became acquainted with other materials like wood, clay, plaster and metal, but stone remained his preferred material. A two year stay in Scotland developed his own creative style, which was inspired by the archaic pre-celtic and other monolithic or indigenous cultures. He also held his first exhibitions there.

He moved to Portugal in 1990 and discovered the lighter side of his craft. With plentiful availability of limestone and marble, it made it possible to work more delicately and also added color to his work.

His work includes:

– Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy public monument and his sister Fanny Hensel, in Hamburg, Germany

– Rotunda/Roundabout ‘Rosa dos Ventos’ in Lagos, near the Marina, together with the Portugues architect Antonio J.B. Fernandes

– ‘Gate of Wishes’ at Wildpark, Schweinfurt, Germany

– American Veterans Monument, Alter Friedhof in Schweinfurt, Germany together with Steff Bauer

– Giant head of Donald Sutherland, alis 'President Snow' for the 'Hungergames, Mockingjay#2, together with Steff Bauer

...as well as privately owned monuments like an astronomical-observatory, fountains and sculptures all over Europe and overseas.
